Recent events in Asia suggest that the risk of an avian influenza pandemic continues
to increase, despite intense efforts by governments in the region
to prevent further spreading of the disease and quell public concerns.
The confirmed cases of H5N1 influenza infections among migratory
birds in China and pigs in Indonesia signal the further spread
of H5N1 in the environment, both geographically and in terms of
the number of affected species. From the perspective of bio era’s
scenarios “roadmap”, there is still no definitive evidence of
efficient human-to-human transmission to suggest that the first
“gate” has been passed.
But, as recently noted by the World Health Organization, the chances
of such an event have increased significantly in recent months.
